ITNinja

We have lots of things to fix and lots of features to implement but would love you to suggest what you feel is important to help us validate our priorities and add new ones!

How can we improve ITNinja?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Software Error Content

As the site is set up to handle the discussion of deployment tips, offer similar support for software errors: by error number and/or message, tips on how to address errors on a software-specific basis.

  2. I'd like to see poorly rated content worth less

After a certain number of people rate something poorly, subtract points from the user based on the rating assigned. For example, 10 people have rated by blog post and it has a 1-star rating, therefore I loose a couple of points originally provided for having submitted it.

  3. Custom Wiki or Repository for CIR and/or MySQL Code

Currently you can search the site for specific things and you might stumble across useful CIR or MySQL code that someone wrote along the way, but it might be better if there was a repository with a compilation of useful scripts and CIR's that others have developed along the way. Here is an example of Chucks on git: https://github.com/csteelatgburg/K1000-Database-Queries.

  4. Update the questions page with last poster and date of last post

It is difficult to follow threads now for me, as it always shows the orginal poster. This is ok, but I would also like to see the last poster, as well as the date/time of last post. This helps me in knowing if something has been responded to.

Item currently in priority backlog, under consideration. We’ve designed this feature, but it got cut at last minute during last sprint.

  5. Editing your profile

For things like city, state, country, etc.. you should have pre defined drop down selections. Having to click each one, delete the "None" contents and type in everything is a little complex. Having the predefined drop downs might be a little more easier to use.

Thank you for your suggestion. We would like to improve the usability of the profile editing as well. It may take a little while before we revamp the whole page, but we’ve started thinking about new designs and will let you know when it gets closer to being launched.

  6. Quoted Posts

in AppDeploy we could quote posts in our reply posts to make it easier to read the replies. Now it seems that there are no more quotes which makes these posts with multiple quotes difficult to read and to understand.

Is there a way to bring back the quote tags in the posts?

  7. Legend shown next to tags indicating meaning of colors (or at least tool tip bubbles)

Colors are nice, indication of what they mean would be helpful.
Filtering of types/colors would be nice.
When user selects a tag, text entered to that point should be replaced by that tag.
Typing more text should always reduce list of tags, sometimes it seems to grow (and rather than or).
Shorter tags should sort ahead of longer ones.

Thanks Michal. We’re thinking about that too. While tagging, yellow is a topic, green is a company, blue is a software without version number, orange is software with a major version number (Microsoft Office 2010) and pink is software with a minor/revision number (KACE Agent 5.1.1234)

  8. Inclusion of OS Patch Content

I'd like to see the site provide pages for OS patches in the same way software is covered to discuss deployment notes and associate questions, blogs and links.

  9. Add the option to send ticket due date alerts to email.

We have a lot of tickets that are time sensitive or need to be completed at a certain date. Having the option to automatically send an email notification on the date and time a ticket is due would help greatly.

  10. Bug report: error occurs when submitting question with identical topic & tag

This happens consistently when submitting a question with, for example, the topic "Scripting." Then a question and description is entered, and below where tags are added, if the same tag is used as the topic, the error "something went wrong" occurs.

This appears to be true for any combination of topic and corresponding tag.

  11. Inventory -> Device -> Timeline

Not sure if this has already been posted. I search and found nothing. At my old job, we use Spiceworks for Inventory management on our devices. Since I started my new position, I have grown to love Dell Kace. However, I missed the Timeline feature. The ability to enter notes about a certain device that Hard drive was replace on this date or the new owner of laptop was change. Maybe device was moved to this location. You get the point. I hate to manage (2) systems for inventory, since Kace does 95% of the job :)

  12. Add contributor of the day/week/month to keep the top contributor's list fresh.

What you will find is that often the same people will stay at the top of lists like this because they joined early on and your competition will go stale. Leave them there, but have a second list of top contributors in the day/week/month to get your secondary contributors going.

Thank you for the suggestion, we do really like the idea of finding more enticing ways to provide top user contributions. By time period as you suggest is one way we could do this. We also like the idea of using topics as verticals so that there are subject-matter experts recognized for their contributions and knowledge.

  13. Consolidate Activity Feed

I think the Activity Feed should be condensed/consolidated to not have 10 records in a row about the same topic. For example, if a question was asked and 3 people provided an answer, a simple "This question was asked and three people responded" would make much more sense than an individual notification for each response. That way, an activity feed could be helpful when first logging in to ITNinja.

    See example feed below:

  14. Bring Back The PM

It would be nice to see a Private Message system added to ITNinja. One very good thing about AppDeploy was the ability to have someone pm you and ask you for help outside of the forum. Or to run something by someone before putting it out there in the worry that you'll look stupid. (Something I've done myself)

  15. Edit/delete comments

I would like to be able to edit or delete a comment that I have posted. My apologies if this is already implemented but I did not see a way to do it.

When you leave a comment, you should see an “edit” link by that post. However, there is no delete comment feature at this time (could get complicated if there are several comments and/or replies). Is edit alone good enough here?

  16. Anyone can mark a question as answered, not just the OP

I've just marked a question as answered, that I posted a repsonse to.
I would have thoght that just the OP could mark this answered, as only they would know if it resolved their issue.

Or is it that anyone can mark as answered to show that the solution posted worked for them?

    Here is the post:

Initially we will let anyone mark questions as answered or unanswered. Later we plan to require you be of a certain rank so that it is something the OP or an advanced user may do. Our big issue of the moment is that you can someone else’s question as answered, but cannot mark it as un-answered. This we plan to have corrected in time for public launch. Thanks!

  17. PERFORMANCE!!!

Perhaps it's network traffic but the new site is INCREDIBLY SLOW!!! So slow in fact that I'm tempted to look for a new site. I am very frustrated at this change! I'm worried that in the attempt to make this site "better" you are going to convolute the content and bury it to the point that it's impossible to find with a responsible amount of effort. Please think of the user base here; my first impression is that you never asked the community what they liked about this site.

We’ve got four times the servers hosting this site as we did for AppDeploy in an effort to handle the expected load. Traffic is very high right now, but our own testing is not showing the slowness you report. Are there certain actions you are performing or certain pages that seem slow, or is it really just everything?

We did extensive research to know what people liked best about AppDeploy and other communities and this (our starting point for ITNinja) is a result of that feedback and research. For example, tagging was the biggest request so we spent a lot of time investing in its implementation. I’ll be posting a blog entry about tagging shortly. Next was the Package KB, everyone loved that so we did not change it much except that now you can comment on entries and anyone can help to contribute to a “deployment tip summary” to…

  19. Move the answered questions to their own tab.

Rename the ALL tab to Active Questions or just Active. It's good to see the answered question but a pain to scroll through all. Just seeing the active ones in their own tab makes it easier and an Answered Tab would let people look at the solution to educate themselves if they come across it.

While we don’t currently have a way to view just those questions that are answered in a tab, we do have a “Unanswered” tab which I think meets your need for a list of questions that are active at http://www.itninja.com/question/unanswered

Was this overlooked or were you thinking of something more?

  20. Text formats in Deployment Tip Summary

Text formats in Deployment Tip Summary are very "large"? Think this looks a bit messy.
For example see summary of FileZilla 3. Just used predefined styles.

Maybe there is a little bit of adjustment possible, to give it a better view :)

    Thank you!

It appears large because you used styles like Heading 1 and Heading 2 and these were translated by the styles for the page. The default font is small, but when using these header styles it can cause unexpected results. We are looking to limit the choices here so reduce this kind of unexpected styling. Thanks!
