Under scripting the crate desktop shortcut wizard should allow you to choose from a list of available icons to assign to the shortcut or to select your own custom shortcut icon.

I support this request, but I have no votes left unfortunately.
It would also be great to be able to target the shortcuts only when the computer has a specific smart label.
