How can we improve the SMA (K1000)?

Asset Management of computer peripherals, monitors, printers, scanners, usb devices

Asset Management of computer peripherals, monitors, printers, scanners, usb devices as part of the computer inventory.

In the inventory of the computer if you could see the ports that the printer is connected to. Right now it just shows the name of the printers installed but if it showed the port also this would help out Help Desk Techs. They wouldn't have to remote the computer to get this information. They could just add printers for a new/rebuild of a machine.

We had to develop our own scripts to process a raw USB inventory into the various types of USB peripherals (besides printers). We need to know what peripherals are attached (by model) so that they can be placed on a refresh schedule (or to aid support in troubleshooting issues). I recognize this would be difficult to implement with just a VID and PID combination from raw inventory. However, if we could build our own reference/lookup table, we'd give KACE the smarts it needs to make the data collected into something more human readable/intelligible.

Printer Port (usb, IP) listed in Computer Inventory would be a huge help. When you have same copier 4x in one building knowing the port it prints to helps determine if something simple like a print job was submitted elsewhere

We have 125 remoted offices and being able to pull in the monitor serial number would be a big help in keeping track of our inventory. There are products that capture the s/n if you run them local to the machine. Undoubtedly, Kace can come up with a solution.

I have only just started doing my asset management now and quite frankly I'm surprised that a Dell asset management system can't talk to a Dell monitor...

Yes, it would be very useful if the K1000 could get serial numbers of connected monitors (and perhaps other devices too). We have to keep records of serial numbers in case equipment is stolen; the K1000 does a good job of keeping records of the computers but we have to have a separate list for monitors. There are certainly tools that do this (one is MonInfo) which could be polled by the agent.

This would be of benefit even if the information isn't up-to-date as it would allow us to search for possible locations that equipment has been moved too.
