How can we improve the SMA (K1000)?

Ability to edit Descriptions

In the default Inventory view, there is a field called description. On Windows boxes, it picks up what each machine is labeled as but on Macs, it remains empty. As we typically have the user listed, it would be helpful if this field were editable or if the same information could be pulled from Macs from one of their custom fields.

Hopefully, this will build traction with the engineers. We deploy many Macs and it is more time consuming when looking through inventory to NOT have some sort of information in the description field. I agree the best route would be to pull from a certain field in preferences. Maybe the sharing name or even the WINS name...Anything is better than a blank field!

I too am disappointed that KACE support has not addressed this issue. We have 3000+ systems onsite, half Windows, the other half Mac or Linux. Being able to associate the Mac/Linux systems with something more descriptive than IP name would help in our daily IT duties.

I think that this post needs more traction. I've been a KACE customer since before they were owned by Dell and there is really no excuse that this hasn't happened yet.

We are a 50/50 shop with half Macs and Windows. Our inventory looks choppy because we are unable to have the Agent do this for us.

I'm told by Kace support a canned response "There are no comparable fields in OSX or Linux that could do this like on Windows" I'm not sure about Linux but this statement is a horribly mistaken as it pertains to OSX. There are many places where a simple text string could be stored that if correctly programed the agent could pickup and place in the KBOX database with little effort.

The most obvious location we have identified is located in a place hasn't changed in the last 5 years of OS X.

System Preferences > Sharing > Remote Management > Computer Settings... > Computer Information

Imagine that, there are 4, not just 1 like Windows... but 4 ready to use Text fields titled "Info 1:" through "Info 4:" All the data you put in these fields will also be displayed in the System Overview Report.

Our simple text string we want to be displayed on Macs is "Dept - Model - Assignment"

I have now gift wrapped a solution that should take a competent programmer little time to write up and apply to the Mac Agent.

Please "Like" my post and lets just fix this so Mac users can enjoy a healthy Kbox inventory too!!

On windows boxes it picks this up from the "computer descrition" field under system properties - computer name tab which is this key in the the registry HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\lanmanServer\parameters /v srvcomment

Hmmm. Apple doesn't have a field like that in their OS. I don't see anything in System Profiler (or System Information on Lion). You could pull it via a Custom Data Return, but it would not populate the "Description" column.
