SDA (K2000)

Please tell us how you’d like to see the System Deployment Appliance product improved!

  1. Be able to create sym links to driverfolders

As Hp also has started to distribute famy cab driverpacks, it would be nice to be able to symlink the different folders to one folder containing the whole family of drivers. for instance the Elitebook 745 G2 Utilizes the same driverpack as the 725 G2 , but we have to copy the drivers from one folder to another for the drivers to install.

  2. Can we include a delayed reboot option?

During post installation tasks processing even after a successful completion we may need delay before Kace engine reboots the computer especially if its the last task.

For instance, I have a .bat file that pulls an installation from the internet the Kace appliance will move onto the next task or reboot before it finishes.

Adding a timeout /t 30 will not delay the reboot.

  3. k2 Off-Board Package Transfer 'backup now' option

Please include a k2 Off-Board Package Transfer 'backup now' option instead of having to edit the Off-Board Package Transfer settings each time to edit the time on the schedule.

  4. Enable option when installing the Virtual K2000 to choose min-OS if creating a larger off-board storage or allow to set size of OVF drive.

Currently the K2000 virtual appliance only comes with hard coded drive sizes.

This would be better used if we could set the option to set the hard drive to the size of drive or select a size as 500GB may not be large enough.

Another option would be to have the option upon install to choose minimum drive size for the OS, then create the off-board storage feature to what ever storage size is desired.

The same process could also be uses for the Remote Site Appliances as well

  5. Allow for Friendly Names for remote sites

In the remote site lists, we have numerous RSA's across the board, it allows us to show IP or Hostname... what I would like to see is like a tag or a Display Name to easily identify which server is which (naming conventions aside)

  6. Allow audit mode when creating an image

When doing a scripted image, it will be helpful to put that image into audit mode automatically so you can more changes to it before syspreping it again.

  7. Basic SNMP configuration...

Basic configuration, such as system location or system contact, for SNMP is not available to the end user. Many SNMP monitoring tools pull this information and map devices using this information. This information can be provided in the /usr/local/etc/snmpd.conf however the end user can not edit this, so options might be to allow this information to be added in the konfig stage of the install or when going into the Security Settings/General Security Settings and putting a check mark in Enable SNMP Monitoring other fields can open (besides SNMP Community String) for syscontact and syslocation. Once saved this information can…

  8. Create a Retire Option

Create a "retire" setting for KBEs, SIs, images, pre/post-install tasks, etc so they are preserved on the KBOX, but they don't appear on boot menu/post install list unless un-retired

The main issue is space; if you have that many KBE/SI/Images/Tasks, you are likely running low on space. Wouldn’t things be better served by exporting/deleting? Reimport when you need them again? Nevertheless, with external storage being available to everyone as of next version, this will be a more compelling feature we’ll look into.

  9. K2000 and Bit Locker

Issue: If MS BitLocker is enabled on the Client Computer, then when the BIOS hands off the boot process to PXE via the NIC and 'times out', then boots to the HDD, after it hits the pxe boot menu, this will trigger bitlocker.

Solution: I need a way for the BIOS to hand control off to PXE and once the PXE option menu is encountered and it defaults to the HDD, but w/o this process triggering MS bitlocker drive encryption.

  10. Quick view for all Dell models supported by KBE

Be able to click on a KBE in the K2000 and see what Dell supported workstations they will work on. Having the driver report is nice, but having to search for the actual network driver for the machine I am working on is a pain. Being able to see the model and OS the KBE would speed up this process.

  11. Reboot client PC for imaging

When scheduling a label of machines (e.g. a classroom of about 50 computers) to automatically install an image adding the ability (ideally via a checkbox) to automatically restart those machines so they can begin imaging. Some machines may not want to be restarted immediately that is why optionally would be great.

  12. Add ability to specify Default Boot Action per machine

3.6 removed the Boot Action "Boot From Local Hard Drive" and number of boots. With these a default action could be set with number of boots set to 0 per machine. And when another boot action was used, default could be returned by chaining boot actions.

I do not want to default all machines to "K2000 menu" or "hard drive" boot (General Settings > Default Boot Action). While I do like this option and think it is great, there should be the ability to override it per machine (and hopefully be as visible as boot actions tab).

  13. Prompt for Post install tasks during image processing

It would be nice to have the ability to get a prompt to come up and ask what other post install tasks need to run during the image process.

Use case: when a machine gets an image deployed, and on certain machines have a prompt come up and have any additional tasks be checked off to run after the OS is installed.

  14. Change resolution on UEFI KBE

With the upcomming of great resolution screens for example the Dell XPS 13 2015.
Which has a resolution of 3200x1800 on a 13 inch screen, the text font is very small, which makes it hard to read.
So the posibility of changing the resolution before the KBE booted up would be a great thing!

  15. Add a widget on Dashboard to show whether scheduled sync to RSA(s) failed or was successful.

Add a widget on Dashboard to show whether scheduled sync to RSA(s) failed or was successful, maybe have a widget to show the status of all scheduled operations. Would be nice to know if something failed without having to wade through logs or submenus.

  16. Mount System Images as a Virtual Disk (VHD) for Editing

Whilst improving the access to images stored on the K2000, being able to actually access them as a mounted virtual disk (VHD) within Windows would be a huge improvement.

We have, in the past, used the K2000's automated rules to discreetly backup a user's machine overnight to ensure we don't lose data. Being able to mount that file as a VHD within Windows would enable us to treat it like any other disk and use K2000 as a unified backup/deployment solution.

Even if this is a case of having a location on the KBOX where we can manually select the…

  17. Ability to schedule boot actions on Deployments > automated deployments > functional (MAC address and IP address)

Ability to schedule boot actions on Deployments > automated deployments > functional (MAC address and IP address) without the need to create a boot action in the details of an image or a scripted installations.

  18. Include Ability to Expand Offboard Storage

Currently, using a Virtual K2000 appliance, it is impossible to expand the offboard storage disk once created - the only way to give yourself more storage is to put the files back onboard, delete the offboard disk, and then re-create, moving the files back over again.

It'd be better if we could just expand the disk in our virtual environment, then ask K2000 to 'rescan' the disk and have the ability to expand into the space.

  19. The CSR generator needs to support SAN's as it does in the SMA v8.1

I am speaking from SDA v5.1 perspective. I do not know if SDA v6.0 has already resolved this. The SMA v8.1 resolves this issue.

The issue is described in this knowledge base article:
    https://support.quest.com/kace-systems-deployment-appliance/kb/230041/error-net-err_cert_common_name_invalid-certificate-error-on-browser-230041-

The SSL certificate signing request feature needs to support the entry of SAN's.

  20. Disable "capture image" option from RSAs

We should have a option to disable or hide the "capture image" from RSAs. For security reasons, we do not need other RSA locations to create their own images. Plus, since Kace already has issues capturing devices from RSAs (if not linking them by IP address), then the image fails and we're unable to delete the failed image from both the RSA or the SDA. We just recently had this issue and had to submit a ticket for Quest support to fix it via tether.
