SDA (K2000)

Please tell us how you’d like to see the System Deployment Appliance product improved!

  1. Mac netbooting across subnets

We would like to be able to netboot a Mac across subnets (we have 39 academic subnets on campus, out of about 107 total subnets) without having to issue a bless command on each Mac or having to have an RSA on each subnet. We have a 10.5 server running DeployStudio that handles this just fine, but I'd like to be able to use KBOX for all of our imaging (Windows imaging on KBOX is much nicer than using Ghost).

We have implemented a number of requests related to macOS imaging in the past, and while this specific remaining request has a high number of votes we cannot proceed with moving this further into our development process, and here’s why:

For macOS (10.14+), imaging is considered a deprecated technology and is no longer supported. The APFS file system, which is now mandatory for macOS, means imaging is no longer possible. And the newer Apple T2 chip prevents net booting, which is another requirement for imaging. Apple’s recommended replacement for macOS Imaging is provisioning through Modern Device Management (MDM) and transitioning from the SDA to KACE Cloud Mobile Device Manager for macOS device management can provide similar and added benefits, such as:
    • Zero-touch Enrollment
    • Built in OS support—including support for 10.14+
    • Remote Access Benefits
    • Post-Deployment Management

  3. Support for APFS in macOS High Sierra

With Apple's transition to macOS HIgh Sierra and their new APFS file system protocol, I would like to see native support for APFS when creating a Mac KBE netboot. As Apple recommends moving to APFS with High Sierra, it is not good practice to continue hobbling along with the older file system format.

    • Import from SMA the task chains exactly like a task chains in the SDA without the need to import the Managed Installations one by one and then create a task group.

The SDA currently supports Windows and MacOS only, and does not support IOS devices.

  6. Upload of customised Mac Netboot images, or allow K Image to work from external Netboot Server.

We currently use our Mac hosted Netboot image as a imaging and Disk First Aid emergency repair netboot. Unfortunately the K2000 will not allow custom netboot images to be uploaded, and the application K-Image cannot be run outside of the K2000 hosted image.

  7. Standalone RSAs.

It would be very useful if remote site appliances could function without being dependent on a primary KACE server. The RSAs could easily store and verify all of the data that they get from their master appliances (licensing, scripted installations/system image data, etc.), especially since they cache their core content already.

Are there any plans for making this happen, and if so, how far out in the timeline is this feature? Thanks in advance!

  8. Deploy User States from the K2000 Web GUI

It would nice to be able to deploy an existing user state to a machine through the K2000 web GUI. Additional functionality along with this could include being able to capture from one device and deploy directly to another device.

We do not plan to implement this feature in the K2000 Web UI. As an alternate solution, you can use Custom Deployments in version 6.0 to deploy a user state to a given machine without deploying an image.

  9. Driver Feed support for Intel NUC

Currently there is no driver feed support for the intel NUC. WMI query return is blank for the manufacture and model and does not work. So we are unable to use KACE by design to image these systems. As there is no path to put the drivers on the K2000 after attempting to harvest the drivers. Hopefully a rush can be put in to support this new hardware

I would love to be able to add onboard storage. My Server came with 2 250gb HD but I have 2 slots left. Why do I need to add external when I can easily add 2 drives TB or more

  11. Change "short file name error" so that image does not state it Failed

We have a few images that have "short file name errors". Therefore, we have to mark the ignore errors box so that the image is automated. However, because of this if there are any actual errors we will not be alerted to them.

For Windows computers a usb external drive can be set created to do local or off line image deployment. Please can a off line / local deployment method be creadted for Macs.

  13. Simple backup to external storage

I would love to be able to schedule my backups directly to external storage without the fear of filling up the restore share. The idea of backups is that they can be scheduled and left alone unless there is an issue which should be alerted by email or some other method.

At the moment, I feel there is too much manual intervention required and the backup process is too complicated?

  15. Assign scripted installations or images to selected boot environments

To have KBox boot selections with different passwords and then assign only particular scripted installs or images to them.
IE a self service PXE boot that only has the install I want the user to install instead of every install available.

  16. Change IP in KBE after boot

    So here's my scenario:
K2000 lives on our IT staff VLAN. Most of our machines live on one of 7 other VLANs in the environment. Our IT staff VLAN is the only one with DHCP.

Currently, a workaround for imaging a large number of machines on a different VLAN is to boot up a DHCP server for that VLAN, image, and then shut it down (various reasons why our VLANs are not DHCP that are non-negotiable).

What I'd like to do is use the KBE Manipulator to create a statically addressed KBE, upload to the K2000, and then create a…

Image capture will always require a K2000 on the network. Perhaps someday we will allow image capture to the RSA; please vote for that feature if it meets your needs.

  19. Vostro in the driver feed

Can we include vostro models in the driver feed? It's largely sold for Brazil companies as a corporate model, and it would be very nice for them to start using it in a more straight forward way to deploy new devices.

Dell only provides driver packs for business class models. You will still be able to download the drivers and place them in drivers_postinstall to be used by the SDA.
